Projects Funded in Spring 2010 for the Remainder of the 2009-2010 School Year
Celebrating May Day (new), Oak Knoll, Kindergarten-2nd grade, 59 students
A spring-themed unit of study to reinforce language arts and math skills. Teachers: Leah Yujuico with Alicia Poole and Megan Dei Rossi.
Globetrotter Day (repeat), Laurel and Encinal, 3rd grade, 168 students
A geography and world cultures program that allows students to experience projects and activities from all seven continents. Teachers: Courtney Shackleton with Whitney Argyres, Mia Henry, Judy Fairbrother, Stacei Santana, Masie Chin, Aleyda Barrera-Cruz, and Maria Mathia.
4th Grade Community Concert (new), Encinal, 4th grade, 174 students
A program that uses song writing to help students enrich their core writing skills, including organization and focus, descriptive writing, and character development. Teachers: Heidi Yamada with Maggie Sanchez, Lela Ward, Rachel Naishtut, Georgia Walton, Charlene Mattos, and Karen Strohmaier.

Child Development through Music Therapy (new), Preschool-8th grade, 50 students
A program that brings music therapy to special education extended school year students to help promote the achievement of their individual goals during the summer months. Teachers: Diane Mathews with Steffany Cressey, Claire Dikas, Alison Ireland, Lynn Poland, Dawn Edgren, and others TBD.
Summer Memories (new), Oak Knoll, Kindergarten-5th grade, 35 students
A digital journaling program that engages students in interactive learning experiences while reinforcing critical reading, research, and writing skills over the summer. Teachers: Johnna Becker and the Oak Knoll summer academic intervention teachers.
Summer Reading and Salutations (new), Encinal, Kindergarten-5th grade, 30 students
The continuation of a successful mentor/mentee program to encourage reading over the summer. Teachers: Petrina Jonas with Robin Reding.

Connections through Culture (new), Laurel, Kindergarten-3rd, 440 students
A school-wide program designed to increase participation and give students and equal voice in the classroom, close the achievement gap, and provide a mirror for student who traditionally don’t see themselves reflected in our schools and the materials we use. Teachers: Ruth Peterson with all classroom teachers at Laurel.
Encinal Post Office (new), Encinal, Kindergarten-5th grade, 732 students
A program that results in the creation of a school-wide post office to encourage and reinforce writing and communication skills, as well as community building and increase student interaction. Teachers: Kay Hatfield with Petrina Jonas.
Music and Motion (new), Preschool and Encinal Special Day Class, 30 students
A program to incorporate music and motion into the regular school year for preschool and special day students to promote reading skills, social relationships, sustained attention, and readiness for increased integration. Teachers: Lisa Walton with Jo Camper and Alex Ruth.
Walk Through California (new), Oak Knoll, 3rd-5th grade, 75 students
An interactive “trip through time” that brings California’s history to life. Teachers: Karen Clancy with Michelle Tom and Jessica Bouret.
